Different Skin Types
Everyone’s skin needs are different, but before you can begin treating things like acne and dark circles under your eyes, you first need to understand how your skin type will affect your basic skincare routine. While you may be aware of the problems you have with your skin, you may not understand how they relate to your skin type, which is why we’ve given you a brief overview of the four different skin types.

Dry
Dry skin is typically due to a lack of moisture that can result in flaky skin or even a rough appearance, especially on the face. Those who have dry skin may also notice that their skin feels tight or itches. That being said, dry skin can be the result of long showers, the season, age, or even genetics. To help combat your dry skin, we recommend moisturizing regularly, avoiding spending long periods of time in the hot shower, hydrating your body by drinking water, and using a humidifier.

Oily
On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have oily skin. Those with the oily skin type typically have excess oil on their face that can give them a greasy appearance, open or larger pores, and may be prone to breakouts in certain areas or all over their face. Excess oil is a result of the oil glands under your skin producing too much sebum. In fact, if you don’t moisturize your face enough, it may trigger your skin to produce more sebum in an effort to keep it hydrated. Other triggers for the oily skin type include hormonal changes, large pores, using harsh soaps, climate, and genetics. If you’re struggling with your oily skin, consider moisturizing regularly, drinking water to stay hydrated, and washing your face daily with a gentle cleanser.

Combo
While many people may have either dry or oily skin, there are those who have a combination of both, hence the name of this skin type. Those who have a combination skin type typically have areas of their face that are oily and other areas that are dry. In most cases, you may find that your T-zone is more oily and your cheeks are dry. If you have combination skin, you may have an especially difficult time finding products that actually work. At Marie’s, we recommend using a gentle cleanser, especially on your T-zone, exfoliating every once in a while, and buying oil-free products. In some cases, you may even find that it’s easier to maintain two skincare routines to help combat both the oily and dry parts of your face.

Normal
Some people are blessed to have what is called the “normal” skin type, which means their skin is well-balanced and isn’t dry or too oily. Some signs you may have normal skin include smooth texture, no blemishes, few or no breakouts, and no sensitivity. While it may feel like a gift to not have to care for extremely dry or oily skin, it’s still important to give your skin the love it needs. That being said, you won’t need to create an intense skincare routine. Instead, simply follow a basic skincare regimen to ensure your skin is hydrated and clean.
How to Choose Products
Once you have a better understanding of your skin type, the next step is to choose the products that will work for your specific skin type. For example, if you are someone who struggles with oily skin, the last thing you would want to buy is an oil-based cleanser. Instead, you would want to choose a gentle cleanser and a hydrating moisturizer. Some skincare brands will tell you which type of skin their product is for, and if it doesn’t, looking at the ingredients in each product can help.
