Understanding Your Skin Type: Part One

There are four main skin types, including normal, dry, oily, and a combination. In part one of this multi-part series, we will give you some tips on how to recognize whether your skin type would be considered normal or dry. Be sure to keep an eye out for part two of this series, but in the meantime contact Marie’s Beauty Salon & Supply to book an appointment with one of our experts!

Normal Skin

Normal skin is just a name that means your skin is well-balanced. Instead of having extremely oily or dry skin (or both), your skin is neither. From time to time, you may experience a little oil in your t-zone, but for the most part, you were blessed with a balanced complexion.

For those who are lucky enough to have been born with normal skin, some key features include:

  • Good blood circulation
  • Fine pores
  • A soft and smooth texture
  • No acne or blemishes
  • A fresh, even look

People with normal skin types are also not prone to sensitivity. However, before you become jealous with envy, those with normal skin do run the risk of developing dry skin as they age.

Dry Skin

Dry skin comes in a variety of levels and is due to low production of sebum. Sebum is a waxy substance that is produced to waterproof and lubricate your skin. Low production of sebum results in the inability to retain moisture, thus you are left with skin that is dry in texture.

People who have dry skin are usually more sensitive to certain skin care products. Along with sensitivity, symptoms of dry skin include:

  • Skin that feels tight or rough
  • Dull complexion
  • Scaly looking skin
  • Flaking
  • Itchiness

If you have dry skin, it’s necessary to incorporation a hydrating routine into your normal skin care regimen. That being said, due to the sensitivity of dry skin, certain moisturizers may cause your skin to become inflamed or your symptoms to worsen.

When choosing a moisturizer, your first thought may be to choose a lotion, but lotions have a tendency to irritate sensitive skin, as well as any moisturizers containing heavy perfumes. It’s best to look for ointments or creams to hydrate your skin. Creams, ointments, and body butters contain oils that help to lock in the moisture. Keep an eye out for products listing olive oil or jojoba oil as one of their ingredients. If you’re looking for a product to help soothe raw or itchy dry skin, lactic acid, glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil, urea, petrolatum, hyaluronic acid, and dimethicone are also ingredients to look for.
