Wash Less Frequently
Those who regularly struggle with dry hair, no matter the season, probably already know that washing their hair too often can make it even more dry and frizzy. However, if your hair becomes particularly dry during the winter, you may not understand the woes of daily washes.
Using shampoo and other hair care products daily can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. The best thing you can do for your hair is to wash it every other day at the very least, and supplement with dry shampoo if it starts to look a little oily.
Dry Hair Before Going Outside
If you normally shower in the morning before you go to work or school, then you may be in the habit of leaving the house with your hair still a little damp. It can be a struggle to get out of the house early in the morning, and drying your hair may be at the bottom of your list of priorities. However, during the winter, leaving the house with wet hair can result in breakage. This happens because water expands in freezing temperatures, and your wet hair is no exception to that rule. The expanding water can weaken your hair, and it may be more prone to breakage. Instead, make sure you take the extra time to dry your hair completely before you head outside. This will ensure that your hair is protected from the elements and won’t dry out as easily.
Hydrate Hair Weekly
There are a variety of small changes you can make to help keep your hair from drying out, but if your hair still feels like it needs hydration, then we recommend using a weekly hair mask or oil. You can use a variety of ingredients you may already have at home to create a DIY hair mask, such as eggs and honey, or you can buy a pre-made hair mask from Marie’s! Hair masks and hair oils work to add hydration directly to your scalp or the ends of your hair. This can give your locks the instant hydration they need, especially if you make it a weekly habit.
Avoid Heat Styling
Intense heat can leave your hair weak, making it prone to breakage. It’s recommended to use a heat protectant if you plan to heat style your hair, but a heat protectant can only do so much for hair that is already dry. During the winter months, avoid using heat to style your hair as much as possible. Adding heat on top of the already dry conditions will just cause more problems for your locks, so it’s best to leave the curling irons and straighteners in the bathroom closet until spring has arrived.
Get a Trim
If you’ve done everything you can for your hair and it doesn’t seem to get any better, then it may be a good idea to get a trim. Trimming your hair can eliminate the dry and broken ends, leaving you with fresh, healthy hair.
