Avoid Brushing Wet Hair
When you’ve just stepped out of the shower, it’s a common instinct to reach for whatever styling tool you can find to detangle your hair before it turns into a mess. For many people, the first tool they grab is a brush to help them fight through the tangles. Unfortunately, a brush is probably the last thing that you should use when your hair is wet. You may not realize this, but your luscious locks are at their most vulnerable when they are damp. The water makes your hair elastic and weak, like when you stretch out a spring too far. There are brushes that are specifically made for wet hair that are safe to use, but if you’re using your regular, everyday brush, it’s best that you reserve it for styling.
Don’t Apply Conditioner to Your Roots
We can all agree that shampoo and conditioner serve two different purposes — shampoo is used to clean your hair and conditioner is used to hydrate and make it silky smooth. That being said, many people apply shampoo and conditioner the same way, which completely defeats the purpose. With shampoo, you want to cleanse your hair from root to tip, so you need to lather it all over your head. With conditioner, on the other hand, you need only to condition the driest parts of your hair, which are usually the ends and the length of your hair, yet many people spread conditioner all over. When you condition your hair, try to avoid using the product at the roots of your hair. Using too much conditioner on your roots can lead to a buildup of oil, leading to greasy hair and clogged follicles. Instead, try conditioning from the crown of your head, down and see if you notice a difference!
Use a T-Shirt to Dry Your Hair
Most people use a towel to dry off their body from head to toe after a shower. That’s what they’re made for, right? Contrary to what you may think, cotton towels can actually damage your hair and cause it to break if you roughly dry off your hair after a shower. As we mentioned above, when your hair is wet, it is quite fragile, and it’s important that you are gentle with it. In addition to roughly drying your hair, the cotton in your towel may actually be the cause of your frizzy hair. Instead, try drying your hair with a t-shirt or use a towel that is specifically made to dry hair.
